Baseball- We give delow an interesting account of the Baseball match, recently played  an the Cricket Field. We have accepted “Influenza” as an excuse for the untoward  delay in the recept of this account, so long kindly promised us by. A Witness, and our readers will no doubt accept the same excuse for its late production, Though late, it will, we are confident, be found better so than never, the details of the first metting being even more interesting now as the return match is so shortly to take place.

Béisbol: A continuación, les ofrecemos una interesante crónica del partido de béisbol que se jugó recientemente en el campo de críquet. Hemos aceptado la gripe como excusa por la demora en la recepción de esta crónica, que un testigo nos prometió amablemente hace tiempo, y nuestros lectores sin duda aceptarán la misma excusa por su tardía publicación. Aunque tardía, estamos seguros de que les resultará mejor así que nunca, ya que los detalles del primer encuentro son aún más interesantes ahora que el partido de vuelta se jugará próximamente.

 

The River Plate Time 15/02/1890.

Saturday afternoon the Baseball nines from the U.S. Flag Ship “Richmond” and U. S. “Tallaposa” played and interesting game on the grounds of the Montevideo Cricket Club. It is the first time the North American National game has ever been played here and many who have never seen it were curious as to how it was played, Quite a number of spetactors winessed the contest, amongst whom werre the U.S. Minister to Rio de Janeiro, Admiral J.H. Guillis and Staff and Officers and ladies of the American and English fletes, also many Montevideans. The “Richmond´s” team was composed of Reiter, Catcher; Franklin, Pitcher; Bennett, 1st Base;Padgett - 2nd Base,

Fitzhenry - 3rd Base; Logan-Right field; Smith-Center field; Stocker-Left field; and Golden-Short Stop. The “Tallapoosa” nine were Steven-Cátcher; Johnson-Pitcher; Derwin-1st Base; Burke -2rd Base; Cutchins-3rd Base; Crossett-Right field; Brady-Center field; Jordan-Left field; and Manning. Short Stop. The Game was called at 3,25 pm. “ Richmond´s” at the Bat. ”Tallapoosa´s” in the Field. In the first inning, all wen well but when the “T´s” returned to the field in the second innings, their pitcher Split his finger, stopping a ball, and the whole nine, becoming for a while demoralized, worked, badly together. In the fourt and fifth innings the “R´s” got accustoned to the pitcher´s ball and ran their score up to twenty five, while the “T´s” only had 4; but here the “R´s” fun stopped.

The “T´s” put Brady behing the Bat to catch, Stevens, in the pitcher´s box and Johnson out in center field. In the remaining four innings, the “R´s” ondy made 1 run, while the “T´s” scored 18; resulting in a score of 26 for the “Richmond´s” to 22 for the “Tallapoosa´s” Dr. Biddle of the “Tallapoosa” was Umpire and his judgment was very satisfactory to both sides. The “R´s” Battery, Reiter and Franklin, playe well, Padgett distinguished himself on 2nd Base, and Bennett on 1st, while Logan did some very pretti catching in the field. Golden, as short spot, proved himself an old hand. On the other side,  Brady showed himself the proper man behind the Bat; Stevens pitched the las four innings in good style; the Base men all did well, while Crossett caugth some pretty flys and Manning did some good batting. The two Nine will arrange for a series of game in the near future.

El sábado por la tarde, los equipos de béisbol de nueve jugadores del buque insignia estadounidense "Richmond" y del "Tallaposa" disputaron un interesante partido en las instalaciones del Club de Cricket de Montevideo. Era la primera vez que se jugaba aquí el béisbol, el deporte nacional norteamericano, y muchos que nunca lo habían visto sentían curiosidad por saber cómo se jugaba. Numerosos espectadores presenciaron el encuentro, entre ellos el Ministro de Estados Unidos en Río de Janeiro, el Almirante J.H. Guillis y su Estado Mayor, así como oficiales y damas de las flotas estadounidense e inglesa, y muchos montevideanos. El equipo del "Richmond" estaba compuesto por Reiter (receptor), Franklin (lanzador), Bennett (primera base) y Padgett (2 base). Fitzhenry - Tercera Base; Logan - Jardín Derecho; Smith - Jardín Central; Stocker - Jardín Izquierdo; y Golden - Parador en Corto. Los nueve de Tallapoosa eran: Steven - Receptor; Johnson - Lanzador; Derwin - Primera Base; Burke - Segunda Base; Cutchins - Tercera Base; Crossett - Jardín Derecho; Brady - Jardín Central; Jordan - Jardín Izquierdo; y Manning - Parador en Corto. El juego se suspendió a las 3:25 p.m. Los Richmond al bate. Los Tallapoosa en el campo. En la primera entrada, todo transcurrió sin problemas, pero cuando los Tallapoosa regresaron al campo en la segunda entrada, su lanzador se fracturó un dedo al detener una pelota, y los nueve, desmoralizados por un momento, jugaron mal en conjunto. En la cuarta y quinta entrada, los “R” se vieron obligados a atacar la bola del lanzador y aumentaron su marcador a veinticinco, mientras que los “T” solo tenían 4; pero aquí terminó la diversión de los “R”. Los Tallapoosa colocaron a Brady detrás del bate para recibir, a Stevens en la caja de lanzamiento y a Johnson en el jardín central. En las cuatro entradas restantes, los Richmond solo anotaron una carrera, mientras que los Tallapoosa anotaron 18; resultando en un marcador de 26 para los Richmond y 22 para los Tallapoosa. El Dr. Biddle, de los Tallapoosa, fue el árbitro y su decisión fue muy satisfactoria para ambos equipos. La batería de los Richmond, Reiter y Franklin, jugó bien; Padgett se destacó en la segunda base y Bennett en la primera, mientras que Logan realizó excelentes atrapadas en el campo. Golden, como campo corto, demostró su experiencia. Por otro lado, Brady se consolidó como el receptor ideal; Stevens lanzó las últimas cuatro entradas con gran estilo. Los jugadores de base tuvieron un buen desempeño; Crossett atrapó algunos elevados espectaculares y Manning bateó bien. Los dos equipos de los Nueve organizarán una serie de partidos próximamente.
